Smoke, CO and gas are three different hazards
People often assume one detector covers everything. It doesn't.
- Smoke — fire, already burning.
- Carbon monoxide (CO) — odourless and colourless, produced by incomplete combustion in furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces and cars in attached garages. Kills without warning. Needs a dedicated CO alarm.
- Combustible gas — natural gas or propane leaking before it ignites.
If you have any fuel-burning appliance, an attached garage, a fireplace or a wood stove, a CO alarm is not optional — and several US states require one by law.
Sensors work best paired with a siren — a phone notification you don't hear is no warning at all.
